The Hopatcong Marching Chiefs took home a first place trophy from the 94th Annual Sussex County Fireman’s Parade held on October 5, 2013, in Franklin, New Jersey.
The Chiefs marched the mile long parade route while playing songs from their 2013 field show, including the theme song for Coach, “Sweet Caroline” and “Here Comes the King,” the Budweiser song. The color guard proceeded the parade block doing routines they learned for the parade.
Sophomore and Co-Color Guard Captain, Megan Kelly said, “Honestly it was really fun! Hearing everyone say ‘is that Sweet Caroline?’ was an awesome feeling. Seeing our color guard come this far has also been an awesome thing!”
It was the first parade outside of Hopatcong the chiefs marched in since the 2009 Greek Independence Day Parade in NYC. “I like doing a parade in another town, and showcasing our band’s progress,” said senior and Drum Captain, Nikki-Anne Rosado.
Senior and Drum Major, Laura Willis said, “It was a really fun experience for me, because we were finally able to play for a large audience and show the county how far we’ve come as a band.”
The Marching Chiefs was awarded first place in the marching band category. The band was unaware of the fact that they were being judged. “We just thought we were marching in a parade to gain some positive public attention,” said senior and Low Saxophone Captain, Janine Munoz. “It was a pleasant surprise that we won a trophy.”
